WELCOME TO THE WORLD OF
ANT SAVAGE ART

Hello, I'm Ant Savage,

I'm a self-taught printmaker based on the English canals. I live and work on our 50ft Narrowboat 'The Corridor ' along with my wife Hannah and our crazy puppy Mabel.

Since leaving school many moons ago I've been a labourer, a factory worker then a painter and decorator. After 20 years in this trade, a global pandemic and the loss of a dear friend I decided to make some changes to how I lived.

During lockdown like so many others I discovered a new interest, this was lino printing. For as long as I can remember I've been interested in Art and illustration, and it served as a constant hobby or go to when I was bored, uninspired or needed a distraction from life.

With time away from the slightly mundane routine of 6am starts and repetitive days I could create whatever I wanted to.

I picked up some tools and some lino and started sketching ideas. I already had a style of drawing which I transferred into creating lino prints. It quickly became an obsession, and I was making multiple print designs a week. I Began by experimenting with basic black and white prints and gradually moved into working with coloured reduction prints which use multiple layers of cutting and inking from a single lino block.

I began sharing my work on social media and was amazed when people started asking if they could buy the prints I'd made, I made the decision to create a dedicated Facebook page for my art (Ant savage art) which began to gain followers, before I knew what was happening, I had somehow become a fulltime printmaker

A lot of my early work was influenced by the boating community that Hannah and I are very much a part of. I began to carve images of narrowboats snaking the canals, historic boats passing through tunnels and the strong women that would navigate us through the second world war. I also found myself carving scenes of factory workers and tradesmen which would resonate with me in a cathartic sense, around this time I began to receive messages on the various social media printmaking groups I had joined asking if I was taking influence from the Grosvenor school of art. In all honesty I'd never heard of it but was very pleased to receive the comparison after viewing the amazing work they had produced close to a hundred years ago

I am now in my 4th year of working as a professional print maker. During the spring and summer months my wife, pup and I travel the canals and trade our work along the towpaths.

I feel very lucky to be able to be making a living from something I love. It does not come without its challenges and there is a lot of work in sustaining the flow of work and everything that comes with organising a small Art business.

I have been lucky enough to have great support, great customers and recently some exciting opportunities. please see my "ANNOUNCMENTS" page to keep up to date with recent events and news.

Thank you all for the support and for visiting my website.

lots of love

Ant x
